Describe the operating mode and outdoor conditions when the problem occurs. A system that works in cooling but struggles in heating may need different checks from one that does not start at all.

Diagnosis may include thermostat configuration, indoor airflow, outdoor fan operation, electrical components, refrigerant performance and defrost controls. The checks depend on the model and the reported fault.
The goal is to identify the cause and verify the proposed solution, rather than treat every symptom as low refrigerant. If a charge problem is found, the next steps should address why it occurred.
Make an informed repair decision
Consider the condition of both indoor and outdoor equipment, repair history, parts availability and the cost of the proposed work. A major repair is a good time to compare a written replacement option, without assuming replacement is always necessary.
Keep leaves and other loose debris away from the outdoor unit. Note any visible ice or displayed error codes for the technician; do not chip ice off the coil or open electrical compartments.

Is frost on the outdoor unit normal?
Light frost can occur during heating and may clear during a normal defrost cycle. Persistent heavy ice or a loss of heating needs an inspection; several airflow, control or refrigerant issues can contribute.
Why is auxiliary heat running?
Auxiliary heat may operate during cold weather, defrost or a large thermostat adjustment. Frequent or unexpected operation can also indicate a setup or performance issue.
